Role of Women in Things Fall Apart and Heart of Darkness Women were once little more than slaves to their male betters. Some women might have been respected, but their places were limited to roles as wives and mothers. They might rule a home, but were not believed intelligent enough for any other role. This chauvinistic attitude is well reflected in the novels Things Fall Apart, by Chinua Achebe, and Heart of Darkness, by Joseph Conrad. In Things Fall Apart, women are praised in their capacities as wives and mothers, almost revered really. In many instances, Achebe paints glowing pictures of them in these roles. Anasi was a middle aged woman, tall and strongly built. With the festivals, held in the public places, men presided and took the seats of honor in front. Women were forced to stand at the edges and look on from there because they simply werent as important. It was the men who held the courts of justice and decided on punishment. Also, throughout the book, Achebe emphasizes the womens role in childbearing and their fault if the children are not born healthy. Nneka has had four previous pregnancies and childbirths. But each time she had borne twins, and they had been immediately thrown away. Her husband and his family were already becoming highly critical of such a woman and were not unduly perturbed when they found she had fled to join the Christians. It was a good riddance (Achebe 151). Because Nneka could no longer fulfill her role as a mother in Ibo society, she was no longer respected. She was not valued for her intelligence or her personality. She was valued by whether or not she could produce healthy children. Because she couldnt, she no longer had a place in her society. In Heart of Darkness women are not paid much attention beyond that of Kurtzs mistress and his fiancee. The only other women mentioned in the novel are the two ladies knitting with skeins of black wool, and the narrators aunt, who got him his job with the Company. In Erich Maria Remarque’s All Quiet on the Western Front, soldiers at the front have a better idea than civilians of the true nature of war because they have experienced the war while civilians have only read about it or listened to government propaganda. Remarque is trying to tell us that only those who experience the war can understand how awful war truly is. In All Quiet on the Western Front, the main character Paul goes back to his home, the people he meets still think that the Germans are winning the war. During the war, Paul takes a leave for 17 days to go back home to visit sick mother and family. While back home, the villagers come and talk to Paul about the war. Paul finds Kemmerich dead after he tries to find a doctor to cure Kemmerich. After Kemmerich’s death, many of Paul’s friends died near the end of the war. Kropp’s leg is also amputated like Kemmerich when he was shot after running away from a battle with Paul. Kropp soon dies afterward after getting a fever from the wound. Paul finds out that another friend, Mà ¼ller, dies after being shot in the stomach. Mà ¼ller gives everything away before he dies, including the boots that Kemmerich gave Paul to give to Mà ¼ller. Paul says that he would give the boot to Tjaden when his time is up. The next person to die is Company Commander Bertinck; he died after being shot in the chest. After Bertinck death, another friend of Paul named Leer is shot in the arm and later dies of eternal bleeding. Many of Paul’s friends also died from the lack of foods and supplies. Targets merchandise and store layout is always consistent at each location which makes it easier for customers to find what they are looking for. Most importantly, Target already has Canadian shoppers that cross the border in order to shop at Target stores. If consumers are already willing to cross the border, then clearly Target has a strong and favorable position when locating in Canada. Unfortunately, with strengths also come weaknesses. Targets employee turnover rate has been high the past couple of years due to wage rates and the amount of part-time employees they hire. When a company hires mostly part-time employees, they will experience a high employee turnover rate. Another weakness is their price compared to Wall-Mart, their biggest competitor. Target is priced slightly higher than Wall-Mart and this does lead to some loss of sales, especially in tough economic times. Lastly, their more specialized segments do not have the brand awareness that their main products do. Specifically, their grocery, pharmacy, and cosmetic segments, which do not receive as much awareness as their counterparts do. Some consumers did not even know Target had a pharmacy or a grocery section in Target (Shaw). The company as a whole does not advertise these segments enough to get the attention they deserve. As strengths and weaknesses are internal to the company, opportunities and threats are external. Target has an abundance of opportunities they could be reaching for, however, there are threats that get in the way. Some of their biggest opportunities lie within private labels. If Target expanded their private label across al departments they could reach a far larger customer base. Any move Wall-Mart makes to differentiate themselves in the market is a threat to Target. One last threat that Target could face is switching costs due to low customer income due to a downward turn in the economy. If customers have low disposable income then they will spend less in general. This may also cause customers to switch to even lower priced retailers like Wall-Mart, thus effecting Targets sales. Porters Five Forces The second tool used, Porters Five Forces, looks at the external environment in the industry as a whole. This tool determines whether or not the industry is attractive. In the analysis it was discovered that for those competitors already in the industry it is attractive, but for those who are trying to enter it is unattractive. One force, Competitive Rivalry is considered very high. There are many competitors in the industry, which offer a similar array of products and services. Companies in the discount department store industry have to compete within their general category as well as with specialty stores and super centers. There are countless retailers, which sell similar products that Target sells. Due to this intense competition Target has had to really capitalize on their value rather than their price. Their strong position lies in their ability to communicate value to their customers through positive customer service and a quality assortment of goods. A second force, threat of new entrants, is considered low. Some of the factors that contribute to this low threat are the large amount of capital needed to enter, high startup costs, and few favorable locations available. If a company cannot obtain the capital needed and the funds needed to cover startup costs, they will not be able to succeed or be profitable in the industry. Target also sells their own private label brands, which are very successful and provide a large number of sales. These two strategies make sure no one supplier can control the price of the goods that are purchased. There are also a large number of suppliers that are competing for Targets business so it gives them little room to haggle for price since Target could easily pick another supplier. Target also purchases large quantities of products, which is another reason suppliers are competing to get Targets business. Lastly, the power of buyers is also low. Consumer spending is strongly correlated with disposable income so depending on the amount consumers have to spend they can either shop for luxuries or necessities. Target covers both of these areas and allows the consumers to be able to spend more when they can afford luxuries and less when they can only buy necessities. Target also offers store brand and name brand so customers have their preference when it comes to tastes and disposable income. When the economy is bad, consumers can buy cheaper store brands and when the economy is better the customers can buy more expensive name brands. Buyers also have low power considering most purchases are small compared to the companys sales as a whole. There will always be a large supply of potential buyers, which makes purchasing power small for them. Target has taken great advantage of this making sure to market to a variety of consumers. Survey Results To better understand the Canadian audience, a survey was created and submitted to current Canadian residents to complete (see exhibit G). Thirteen questions were asked to gather information about demographics, geographies, shopping habits, knowledge about Target, and their opinions on hockey. Sixty consumers responded to the survey. The respondents were predominantly male, making up 90% of the total. Their age ranged between 17 and 44, with the majority falling between 18-24 and 25-34 year olds. The respondents largely live in the province of Ontario, in the cities of Toronto and Ottawa. Almost all of the respondents have heard of Target, with a single person having not heard of the store. This is attributed to word of mouth and visits, advertising on American channels in Canada, and visits to the United States. Olfactory System - Sense of Smell The olfactory system is responsible for our sense of smell. This sense, also known as olfaction, is one of our five main senses and involves the detection and identification of molecules in the air. Once detected by sensory organs, nerve signals are sent to the brain where the signals are processed. Our sense of smell is closely linked our sense of taste as both rely on the perception of molecules. It is our sense of smell that allows us to detect the flavors in the foods we eat. Olfaction is one of our most powerful senses. Our sense of smell can ignite memories as well as influence our mood and behavior. Olfactory System Structures   Patrick J. Structures of the olfactory system include: Nose - opening containing nasal passages that allows outside air to flow into the nasal cavity. Also a component of the respiratory system, it humidifies, filters, and warms the air inside the nose.Nasal cavity - cavity divided by the nasal septum into left and right passages. It is lined with mucosa.Olfactory epithelium - specialized type of epithelial tissue in nasal cavities that contains olfactory nerve cells and receptor nerve cells. These cells send impulses to the olfactory bulb.Cribriform plate - a porous extension of the ethmoid bone, which separates the nasal cavity from the brain. Olfactory nerve fibers extend through the holes in the cribriform to reach the olfactory bulbs.Olfactory nerve - nerve (first cranial nerve) involved in olfaction. Olfactory nerve fibers extend from the mucous membrane, through the cribriform plate, to the olfactory bulbs.Olfactory bulbs - bulb-shaped structures in the forebrain where olfactory nerves end and the olfactory tract begins.Olfactory tract - band of nerve fibers that extend from each olfactory bulb to the olfactory cortex of the brain. Olfactory cortex - area of the cerebral cortex that processes information about odors and receives nerve signals from the olfactory bulbs. Our Sense of Smell Our sense of smell works by the detection of odors. Olfactory epithelium located in the nose contains millions of chemical receptors that detect odors. When we sniff, chemicals in the air are dissolved in mucus. Odor receptor neurons in olfactory epithelium detect these odors and send the signals on to the olfactory bulbs. These signals are then sent along olfactory tracts to the olfactory cortex of the brain. The olfactory cortex is vital for the processing and perception of odor. It is located in the temporal lobe of the brain, which is involved in organizing sensory input. The olfactory cortex is also a component of the limbic system. This system is involved in the processing of our emotions, survival instincts, and memory formation. The olfactory cortex has connections with other limbic system structures such as the amygdala, hippocampus, and hypothalamus. The amygdala is involved in forming emotional responses (particularly fear responses) and memories, the hippocampus indexes and stores memories, and the hypothalamus regulates emotional responses. It is the limbic system that connects senses, such as odors, to our memories and emotions. Sense of Smell and Emotions The connection between our sense of smell and emotions is unlike that of the other senses because olfactory system nerves connect directly to brain structures of the limbic system. Odors can trigger both positive and negative emotions as aromas are associated with specific memories. Additionally, studies have demonstrated that the emotional expressions of others can influence our olfactory sense. This is due to activity of an area of the brain known as the piriform cortex which is activated prior to odor sensation. The piriform cortex processes visual information and creates an expectation that a particular fragrance will smell pleasant or unpleasant. Therefore, when we see a person with a disgusted facial expression before sensing an odor, there is an expectation that the odor is unpleasant. This expectation influences how we perceive the odor. Odor Pathways Odors are detected through two pathways. The first is the orthonasal pathway which involves odors that are sniffed in through the nose. The second is the retronasal pathway which is a pathway that connects the top of the throat to the nasal cavity. In the orthonasal pathway, odors that enter the nasal passages and are detected by chemical receptors in the nose. The retronasal pathway involves aromas that are contained within the foods we eat. As we chew food, odors are released that travel through the retronasal pathway connecting the throat to the nasal cavity. Once in the nasal cavity, these chemicals are detected by olfactory receptor cells in the nose. Should the retronasal pathway become blocked, the aromas in foods we eat can not reach odor detecting cells in the nose. As such, the flavors in the food can not be detected. This often happens when a person has a cold or sinus infection. Smell Disorders Individuals with smell disorders have difficulty detecting or perceiving odors. These difficulties may result from factors such as smoking, aging, upper respiratory infection, head injury, and exposure to chemicals or radiation. Anosmia is a condition defined by the inability to detect odors. Other types of smell defects include parosmia (a distorted perception of odors) and phantosmia (odors are hallucinated).
